This blog posts introduces three commonly used EXCEL functions; the SUM, AVERAGE and MEDIAN functions.
The SUM function can accepts number inputs or cell ranges, and adds them together to determine the sum. The syntax for the SUM function is
= SUM (number 1, number 2, number 3,….)
= SUM (cell1:cell2, cell3:cell4,….)
The AVERAGE function returns the average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers provided. The AVERAGE function is
= AVERAGE (number 1, number 2…)
= AVERAGE (cell1:cell2, cell3:cell4….)
The MEDIAN function returns the median number of the numbers provided. The MEDIAN function is
= MEDIAN (number 1, number 2…)
= MEDIAN (cell1:cell2, cell3:cell4….)
In the following example the three functions are used to calculate the sum, average and median of the Total Sales for 6 months. These functions are commonly used to analyze and observe trends in data sets.
