New Navigation Ideas

As we’ve said before, one of the advantages of QuickBooks Online (QBO), is the constant pace of additions and improvements. Sometimes these improvements show up suddenly in our QBO file. Other times QuickBooks makes them available for QBO users to evaluate and decide if they like them or not.

A new menu idea for navigating QBO is one of the latter. It’s a new menu structure available to QBO users to see if they like it better than what exists now.

Let’s try it out.

First, navigate to Settings (the gear icon). In the first column titled Settings, the last item is QuickBooks Labs. Click that.

You will see a window listing a number of proposed features the software engineers at Intuit have made available for evaluation.

Turn on the Alternate Navigation with Centers as shown above. When you return to your QBO home page, refresh your browser.

Note the new menu in the left-hand blue panel in the above screenshot.

The old Customer section is now Customers and Sales.

Selecting the Customers and Sales section opens a window that contains links to customers and sales. The Customer Center is still available from the customer list as it was before the alternate navigation option was chosen.

The Sales List link opens a listing of sales in QBO that can be filtered by type and date. A new transaction can be created by selecting the blue “New Transaction” button.

The Vendors and Expenses section is similar. A list of vendors and a list of expenses are available.

The Banking section is the same as it was, except that it is a main section so that it can be accessed directly from the menu. Before, it was a sub-listing under Transactions. Transactions is no longer on the list, the items that used to be in this section are now in other places like Banking, Customers and Sales, or Vendors and Expenses.

Chart of Accounts is another section that was under Transactions before. Now it is in main menu section rather than nested below another selection.

You should turn on the alternate navigation feature and try it out. It can be turned off if you decide you don’t like it.

Either way, you should express your opinion of the proposal to QuickBooks by going back to the QuickBooks Labs window and choosing Give Feedback.

Who knows, you may have part in deciding the way the future QBO looks.
